Answers to Questions About Windows

Questions:Answers:
05 Apartment TierNone of the windows in the 05 apartment tier are "historic," including the bay windows that face south, since they look out on the alley. Only windows that look out on 12th St or Mass Ave are considered "historic."
Barred windowsFor any windows that have bars on the outside, the bars will have to be removed for window installation and then re-welded back into place at an estimated additional cost of $50-100 per window.
CleaningThe proposed windows have "tilting sashes" (the bottom and top sectios both tilt inward), making cleaning the outside of the window very easy.
ColorWe are asking owners whether they prefer the bronze or beige color for the historic windows, but ultimately only one color will be chosen so that all windows look the same. The Historic Preservation Office may require us to choose one color over the other as well. Bronze is the more likely option.
CostThe cost per window quoted INCLUDES installation fees. Actual cost per window (and total cost per unit) will be confirmed once we have heard from all interested owners.
Energy Efficient Federal tax creditIt is recommended that you visit www.irs.gov or consult a tax professional to determine whether or not these windows qualify for an Energy Efficient Federal tax credit. The DC standards are here:

Non-historic windows: SpecsThe "non-historic" windows have different glass, interior paint finish, and material (alumnium vs. vinyl) finishes, depending on what individual owners want. Price ranges from $650-$800 depending on selected options.
ScreensNew screens are included in the price per window.
Why replace? No one is required to replace the unit windows. That said, anyone who has lived in the New Plaza units has surely realized that our current windows have terrible insulation and do not block outside noise very well. Several owners also have windows that are broken or do not function well. At the very least, the proposed replacement windows will lower your energy bill, and the tilting pane features allows for easy access to the exterior side of the window for cleaning.
Window repairsSupreme Windows may be able to offer repair services to existing windows on a case by case basis. That said, they are a window installation company, not a window repair company.
