Noise and Gridlock at 12th & Mass

At a recent Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) meeting, Lisa Sutter with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced that the city's automated photo enforcement program will expand in the coming months with over two dozen new traffic cameras. MPD is currently soliciting resident suggestions for the locations of these cameras, which are intended to not only target red-light runners, but also cars that block the box and create dangerous gridlock conditions for pedestrians.

Our intersection at 12th & Mass Ave is notorious for the noise, gridlock, and related safety hazards that occur there daily, especially during morning and evening rush hour. The Board is submitting this letter (click here) to MPD requesting the installation of a photo enforcement device at our intersection.

We urge all New Plaza residents to also write Ms. Sutter with a supporting request.
It is important that Ms. Sutter hears from numerous citizens about the dangerous conditions of the intersection. Please take a minute to send a short email to Lisa Sutter with MPD at lisa.sutter@dc.gov, supporting the Board's request for a photo enforcement device at 12th & Mass Ave. Specifically mention the need to improve gridlock conditions (cars blocking the box) and the resulting pedestrian safety hazards that occur at the intersection daily.
